Misadventures in Purity is a collaborative project designed to help unpack purity culture, and its effects on the body, mind, relationships, and sexuality. The project includes academic content, as well as personal stories, art, poetry, and other media.

Founded in 2019, MIP hopes to provide resources and comfort to those vicitimized by the harmful ideologies surrounding purity culture, and to raise awareness about how these ideologies are used to harm and oppress. In sharing these stories, we hope to create a narrative of healing and growth, as well as educating readers on recognizing and combatting harmful ideologies.

Editor Emma Morrison is a 20something blogger, and graduate of an Honours Bachelor of Arts in Religion and Culture/Medieval Studies from Wilfrid Laurier University. Her interest in purity culture began in her teenage years, as she strained against prescribed expectations and limitations within her Pentecostal community. Emma wrote her undergraduate thesis on the cognitive dissonance between the perceived “progressive” nature of her own religious tradition, and the distinctly non-progressive way it teaches about sex, sexuality, and relationships. Emma hopes to continue her work on purity culture through Misadventures in Purity, and help others to share their stories and experiences.
